Leading member of the Australian Olympic Committee of Energy Experts visits Freiburg

Freiburg, 09/03/01. The day before yesterday, Dr. Deo Prasad, who is chiefly responsible for the power supply from Renewable Energy at the Olympic Games in Sydney, visited the headquarters of the International Solar Energy Society (ISES) in Freiburg.

In his talks with Burkhard Holder, executive director of ISES, the high-ranking expert discussed the success of the Olympics in Sydney from the point of view of energy policy. “The energy efficiency measures used in the Olympic village, the stadium, the aquatic center, and other locations in Sydney outside the Olympic grounds have set new standards in energy policy. These measures have demonstrated the latest technological developments and led to broad acceptance among governments and people even beyond Australia’s borders.” At the Sydney Olympics, power supply and energy efficiency have been given priority for the first time and included in the planning and organization of the Games from the outset. The resulting awareness of the possibilities and opportunities of Renewable Energy has led the Australian government to implement specific support programs, thus creating a veritable run on innovative technologies in Australia.

This year, the Solar World Congress, which is organized every two years by ISES, will take place in Adelaide from 25 November to 2 December. With preparations just as professional as for the Games, the Congress, hosted by the Australian and New Zealand Solar Energy Society (ANZSES), will cover all aspects of Renewable Energy with its technical program.

Burkhard Holder: “We are pleased to be able to offer the Solar World Congress as an international Forum for research and development, international market expansion, new applications, further training, and the discussion surrounding socio-economic and political questions.”

High-ranking representatives from politics and the economy – such as Dr. Maki Mandela, the daughter of Nelson Mandela and the Executive Manager of the South African Development Bank – have already agreed to participate and will contribute to the positive market development of Renewable Energy.

In addition, ISES is working with technical universities, experienced architects and the Australian Section of ISES to conduct a summer academy for solar architecture in Australia to support the further training of students, architects, and urban planners in solar construction in Australia. The first event, Prasad and Holder stated, is to take place in the framework of the Solar World Congress and then be continued in other cities in the country. The participants will find a large spectrum of innovative examples and an international forum for the exchange of information and ideas.
